The Bentley Family

Cornelius Bentley, known as a man of considerable means, and his family occupied the Parks Bentley site from the mid 1800’s to the early 1900’s. The house was purchased by Cornelius in 1866 and it remained in the family until the death of his daughter Harriet, in 1930.

Harriet Bentley was a commercial artist with a studio in New York City. She was also a teacher, inventor, local historian, cartographer and author. Harriet wrote “The Old Military Road,” a booklet on local history. She also wrote two children’s short stories, and many of her drawings and paintings are on display at the house.
