The Parks Family

The first families to settle in Moreau were the Parks Family. Elijah Parks purchased 800 acres of land, in what is now South Glens Falls, in 1766. His son, Daniel, settled “on the flat down the river” at what is now the present Parks Bentley Place. Daniel built a log home on the property in 1773 and settled there with his wife, Lydia and their eight children. He was a veteran of the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War.

The Village of South Glens Falls was first known as Parks Mills until the Revolution. By establishing a ferry, sawmill, gristmill and brick yard, the Parks family contributed a great deal to the early history of South Glens Falls and the surrounding area.
